Fishery Notice

FLIGHT PROGRAM
A herring spawn flight occurred on Mar 21 assessing the Vancouver Island shoreline between Qualicum Beach and Crofton. Saltspring Island, Trincomali Channel, Pylades Channel and the east side of Gabriola Island were also assessed. Active spawns were observed in Ganges Harbour and Long Harbour.  The next herring spawn flight is scheduled for March 25 and is weather dependent. Subsequent bulletins will only be provided if spawn flight data or other new information becomes available.


DIVE PROGRAM
Once herring have completed spawning, commercial divers return to the area to collect data. After marking out quadrats along transects, divers record information used to calculate the amount of herring eggs laid in a particular area.
