SOUNDING PROGRAM The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle conducted a 27 day charter in the Strait of Georgia from February 20 to March 18. Management Platform Viking Spirit conducted a 15 day charter from February 26 to March 12. Industry test vessels assessed on the following days: Nita Maria (March 3,4,5,8), Viking Cavalier (March 4-6,12,13,15&16) and Western Investor (March 8,11). The peak sounding estimate for the Strait of Georgia is 73,790 tons. Note: in-season tonnage estimates from soundings are not used to determine quotas, however sounding estimates and roe quality data can be used by Fishery Managers and harvesters to inform fishery implementation. No test/sample fish are retained for sale. DIVE PROGRAM Once Herring have finished laying their eggs, divers return to the area to collect data. After marking out quadrats along transects, divers record information used to calculate the amount of Herring eggs laid in a particular area. Dive charter vessels Pacific Discovery and Ocean Cloud commenced assessment in the Strait of Georgia on March 18. FSC HARVEST ACTIVITY Mariners are reminded to maintain 100 meter distance and reduce speed while transiting nearby any FSC Herring spawn harvest operations. COMMERCIAL GILLNET FISHERY As described in FN0243 the Strait of Georgia roe Herring gillnet fishery opened at 12:00 hrs March 14 and closed March 16 at 22:00 hrs (see FN0260). The validated catch is 2,703.992 tons of the 2,611 ton catch target. COMMERCIAL SEINE FISHERY As described in FN0213 the Strait of Georgia roe Herring seine fishery opened at 14:30 hrs March 8 and closed March 13 at 18:00 hrs (see FN0240). The validated catch is 2,320.714 tons of the 2,304 ton catch target. FLIGHT PROGRAM The 11th Strait of Georgia Herring Spawn Flight departed at 09:30 hrs March 23 from Departure Bay, Nanaimo. There was no spawn observed on today's flight. The flight headed south from Departure Bay along the Vancouver Island shoreline to Salt Spring Island. The flight then turned north to cover Galiano Island northward past Gabriola Island and up to Nanoose Bay before returning to Nanaimo. Bird activity at south end of Flat Tops and entrance to Nanoose Bay. There are no additional overflights scheduled at this time.
