FN0067-COMMERCIAL - Invertebrates: Labels required for 2023 Commercial Prawn by Trap fishery

DFO, working in collaboration with the commercial prawn industry, has developed a traceability program for prawn tubs, which will be implemented for the duration of the 2023 season. Harvesters will be required to affix a small label (approximately 2" x 1") to all containers of prawn tails once they are packaged. These labels must be ordered in advance of the season through J.O. Thomas and Associates, the prawn industry's service provider, and any unused labels are to be surrendered to the service provider upon closure of the commercial prawn fishery.

These tub labels will meet the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard's announcement requiring that a prawn tub traceability program to be in place for the 2023 season. The tamper evident labels will have a unique identifier that will allow the product to be traced back to the point of harvest, and the date of harvest must be written on each label in water resistant ink.

This traceability program does not include frozen-at-sea whole finger-packed prawns or live/fresh prawns, but will be required for all tubs of prawn tails packed in liquid (seawater) and frozen.

More information from the commercial prawn industry, including instructions on how and when to order labels, will soon be distributed to all licence holders via Canada Post.
