FN1298-SANITARY - Rainfall Warning for West Vancouver Island and the Central Coast
A rainfall warning (copied below) for the West Coast of Vancouver Island and the Central Coast has been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada's Weather Service. Please be advised that intense rainfall events resulting in flooding and/or sewage collection system overflows, especially occurring after a prolonged period of dry weather, can adversely affect marine water quality and potentially result in temporary emergency shellfish harvesting closures. Although there is no proposed closure at this time, shellfish harvesters are advised to monitor weather conditions and warnings, and to plan their harvesting activities accordingly. Rainfall warning issued for: West Vancouver Island, B.C. Central Coast - coastal sections, B.C. Current details: Rain, at times heavy, is expected. A frontal system over Haida Gwaii tonight will move southwards down the BC Coast today. A moist southwesterly flow associated with the front will result in significant rainfall amounts that will reach warning criteria over the coastal sections of the Central Coast and West Vancouver Island. Heavy rainfall will begin this morning on the Central Coast while the West Vancouver Island will see the significant rain beginning near midday. Storm totals well in excess of 100 mm are expected. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
