FN1107-RECREATIONAL - Shellfish - Closure to Specified Areas for Night Hauling and Setting of Crab Traps

AREA CLOSURES FOR NIGHT-TIME SETTING AND HAULING OF RECREATIONAL CRAB TRAPS

A night-time prohibition for the setting and hauling of crab traps in the
recreational fishery is now in effect for Management Areas 14, 16 to 19, 28 and
29. Night-time hours are defined as 'from one hour after sunset to one before
sunrise'.

Variation Order 2019-RCT-550 is in effect.

Overnight soaking of recreational crab traps is still allowed (except as
elsewhere advised in the Sport Fishing Guide, for example, navigational
closures in subareas 28-8 and 28-10), however these traps must be set and
hauled only during daylight hours. Daylight hours are defined as 'from one hour
before sunrise to one hour after sunset'.

This management action has been taken to deter illegal poaching activities from
taking place in these areas under cover of night, pursuant to consultations
with the Sport Fish Advisory Board.

The National Research Council of Canada publishes official sunrise and sunset
hours at https://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/services/sunrise/index.html

Please consult the online Sport Fish Guide on our web page at
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/index-eng.html to confirm the latest
information for all fisheries and openings and closures.

Reminder: Eating contaminated shellfish can be life threatening! Closures
change frequently throughout the year. It is illegal to harvest shellfish from
closed or contaminated areas.

For more information contact a local DFO office.
