Fishery Notice

The pre-season forecast for Nootka Chum was below the lower fishery reference 
point so a Stage 2 assessment fishery was not planned pre-season. A Stage 1 
assessment fishery was requested by the Area D Harvest Committee in-season 
based on Chum encounters in late season Chinook fisheries. A Stage 1, two boat 
limited effort assessment fishery was approved and fished 1.5 days over the 
last 2 weeks. CPUE's from the first two weeks (75 and 51 Chum/vessel-day) were 
consistent with the poor pre-season forecast. Catch rates from later weeks do 
not have utility for predicting return size. No further Area D Chum gill net 
fisheries are planned in Nootka Sound this season.
