Fishery Notice

Invertebrates: Manila and Littleneck Clam Area E.

Opens from 02:00 hours June 13, 2019 to 16:00 hours June 14, 2019 (2 tides) by 
hand digging only in the following areas:

Subareas 17-4. 

Portion of Subarea 17-6 west of a line drawn from
a point starting at the boundary line for Subarea 17-8 on
Penelakut (Kuper) Island at 48º56.06' N latitude and 123º37.88'
W longitude heading in a straight line southwesterly to a point
at 48º55.02' N latitude, 123º38.48' W longitude on the Subarea 
boundary line between Subareas 17-6 and 17-9. 

[NAD83], 17-10, 17-12, 17-13, 17-16, to 17-20.

Except for the closures as described on pages 11 and 12 of appendix 1 of the 
2019-2021 Clam Management Plan.

Shellfish harvesters are advised to monitor weather conditions and warnings and 
to plan their harvesting activities accordingly. 

During cold weather bury all undersized and non-target clams.

Harvesting is prohibited in all sanitary contamination closure areas. 

Harvesters are responsible for checking Fishery Notices for the Bivalve 
Shellfish Marine Biotoxin Updates, as recommended by the Canadian Food 
Inspection Agency and issued by DFO.

Notes: 

Recreational, Parks and Food, Social and Ceremonial closures are described on 
pages 11 and 12 of Appendix 1 of the 2019-2021 Clam Management Plan e.g. Yellow 
Point, Sandwell Provincial Park, Drumbeg Provincial Park, Pilot Bay, Gabriola 
Bar, Nanoose Bay (fronting Nanoose IR) and Sansum Narrows.

Harvesters are reminded that they need a 2019 Fish Harvester Registration Card 
and a 2019 commercial clam licence to participate in openings.

Area E ACL's licence applications will be administered through the local band 
offices.

Fishers should consult the 2019/2021 Intertidal Clam Management Plan and the 
local DFO office for descriptions of areas closed for sewage contamination 
reasons. There are numerous contamination closures in place throughout the 
fishing area.

All eligible fishers must have their 2019 licence and meet the Conditions of 
that licence. 

This includes:

Wear a high visibility vest with licence number marked on it. 
All containers holding clams shall be marked or tagged with the following 
information:

Licence number, Harvest date, Licence holder's name, beach or location where 
harvesting occurred and the Pacific Fisheries Management Subarea. Tags shall be 
waterproof and information shall be written in water resistant ink. No 
container of clams shall remain untagged during transport to market sale or a 
wet storage location in preparation for market sale.

This fishery will only take place provided PSP levels and water quality remain 
acceptable.  Fishers are advised to contact the local fishery office or check 
Fishery Notices prior to this fishery to confirm the opening.
