The roe herring gill net fishery opened at 07:30 hours March 15 and remains
open until further notice. Fishing has slowed over the last few days as
spawning has waned along VI shoreline South of Chrome Island to Qualicum Beach,
assessments are being conducted from French Creek to Nanaimo. Total estimated
catch based on validations and hails to this morning is approximately 8,400
tons of the 11,472 ton quota.

The roe herring seine fishery closed March 15 at 16:00 hours with a total
validated catch of 7,178 tons of the 8,311 ton quota.

The test vessel Western King assessed French Creek to Nanaimo yesterday.
Soundings from Nanaimo to Outer Nanoose found approximately 4,000 tons. A
sample was obtained last night near Lantzville, with an estimated 2,400-2,700
tons in the area - average 9.3% roe and 19.3 cm fish.

A spawn flight departed Nanaimo this morning at 9:30 hours. The flight covered
the VI shoreline from Nanaimo to Kitty Coleman Beach, and the Denman/Hornby
Island coastlines. Previously observed spawns around Cape Lazo and from
Qualicum Beach to Chrome island have slowed to light intensity or are washed
out. No new spawn observed. Next spawn flight is scheduled for Saturday, March
23 at 09:00 hours departing from Nanaimo.

Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete.

Notice to the fleet transiting the Nanoose area that Whiskey Gulf Range is

PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE:

Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in
Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas
creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge
of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters
within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act.
Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage
discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites
by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing
congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
