Central Coast Herring Bulletin #1
March 15, 2019: 

The charter vessel Windward Isle is scheduled to operate 22 days starting March 
17, 2019.  Windward Isle will commence from Bella Bella sounding toward East 
Higgins Pass and Kitasu Bay where it will focus on sounding and obtaining 
herring samples for scientific analysis and roe test samples.  

Three gill net charter vessels will operate this season.  The first vessel will 
start March 20 with staggering start dates for the other two vessels:

Lady Raven - March 20, 2019
Three Girls II - To be determined  
Royal Jazz - To be determined  

CCGS Vector will operate as Central Coast Management Platform from March 17 to 
April 5, 2019 with DFO manager Bradley Koroluk aboard.  The primary focus will 
be sounding for herring, conducting shoreline herring and spawn surveys and as 
communications platform.    

Spawn flights are scheduled for March 22, 25, 28 and April 1, 4, 8 and 11 from 
Bella Bella.  DFO and Heiltsuk representatives will attend the flights.  Dates 
are subject to change due to weather and herring activity.  

Heiltsuk First Nation holds a total quota of 304,000lbs (SOK Macrosystis or 19 
equivalent license eligibilities, and 8000 lbs Egregi.   

Any intense fish sounding mammal, bird, whale, or herring spawn observations 
are requested to be reported.   

Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
