There was an estimated 2,700 tons of catch on March 13 in this area. Total catch to date for the Strait of Georgia roe herring seine fishery is estimated at 7,000 tons of the 8,311 ton quota. Validations are ongoing. Spawn has been reported along the NE shoreline of Denman Island this morning from White Spit (north of Sandy Island) to Komas Bluff. The roe herring gill net fleet is on stand-by but there is no confirmed opening yet. A spawn flight departed at 9:30 hours this morning from Nanaimo. The flight confirmed heavy spawn along Komas Bluff - 1.8 nm. Another 3.9 nm of light to medium spawn slightly further north from Comox Bar to top of Denman Island, although some of this may be washout due to SE winds. No other spawn observed. Next flight will be tomorrow morning. The DFO Management Platform Canadian Shore will be assessing the VI shoreline and around Denman Island today, this is the last day the management platform will be on the grounds. Once the management platform has left the grounds, any additional seine fishing will require an on-board At Sea Observer. Test vessel Denman Isle will be assessing and collecting biological samples for stock assessment in Areas 17S and 15 over the next few days, this charter ends on March 18. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm) PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE: Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
