The Strait of Georgia roe herring seine fishery opened yesterday at 15:45 hours in Northwest Bay, fishing is ongoing in the NW Bay to Parksville area with an approximate 3,000 tons of catch to date, validations commenced this morning and are ongoing. Total TAC for the roe herring seine fishery is 8,311 tons. The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle resumed assessments last night along the VI coast from NW Bay to Qualicum Beach and obtained a sample from the Qualicum Beach area this morning with 7.7% roe, 18.6cm fish. Assessments today will be focusing on the VI coast to Mapleguard Point, and Baynes Sound. The spawn flight this morning departed from Nanaimo at 10:00 hours. The spawn North of Parksville Bay that was observed yesterday is active and has expanded toward French Creek, 1.4nm. The spawn observed at Shields Pt. over the last couple of days has stopped. Concentrations of birds and sea lions off Fillongley. The next spawn flight is tentatively planned for tomorrow morning at 9:00am. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible. NANAIMO HARBOUR NOTICE: TO ALL CFVs participating in the HERRING FISHERY IN AND AROUND THE NANAIMO AREA in FEBRUARY/MARCH 2019 Please be advised that the EAST SIDE of the Concrete pier (Visiting Vessel Pier) is closed to all Transient Vessel Traffic. The east side is the outside of the Pier, the side closet to Protection/ Newcastle Islands. Under NO circumstances are ANY TRANSIENT vessels allowed to tie on that side. This includes CFVs.
