Fish are moving around a lot with the potential for imminent spawns, an intensive test program has been implemented to maintain coverage in all areas. The Western Investor came back on the test program last night, for a total of 4 industry test boats, the DFO charter test boat Denman Isle and the DFO Management Platform Canadian Shore. Assessments last night and this morning are indicating decreasing abundance of stocks in the area north of Hornby and Denman islands and increasing abundance to the south. Three test sets last night: Kitty Coleman Beach for 6.5% and 18.9cm; Columbia Beach for 11% and 19.3cm; Off Qualicum Beach for 8.7% and 18.6cm This morning's assessments included a large body of fish that is located off Bowser in deeper water, estimated at 30,000-40,000 tons. Another large body of fish was found this morning between French Creek and NW Bay with an estimated 10,000 tons. Three test sets were completed this morning: the Horseshoe (EC Denman Island) which was 5.4% and 17.5cm; off French Creek which was 8.2% and 19.0cm; and a test off Chrome Island which we don't have results for yet but industry samples suggest that the fish is smaller than target. Assessments today will focus on Lower Lambert and the area between Mapleguard to NW Bay. The spawn flight this morning departed from Nanaimo at 09:00 hrs. Approximately 0.8nm of heavy, active spawn was observed North of Parksville Bay. Bird activity reported in Kye Bay. The spawn observed at Shields Pt. yesterday is relatively small and does not appear to be active today. The spawn north of Parksville Bay is active and expanding toward Parksville Bay, this spawn is being assessed by gill net industry reps this morning and afternoon. The next spawn flight is planned for tomorrow morning at 10:00am. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm) PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE: Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
