Yesterday's assessments found significant bodies of fish building around Eagle Rock and Chrome Island, fish appear to be moving toward Lower Baynes Sound with lots of sea lion and bird activity. Assessments throughout Baynes sound yesterday and this morning showed slight increases in fish. While significant bodies of fish remain North of Hornby Island around Shield's Pt. and East of Denman around Komas Bluff, the very large body that was seen North of Hornby/East of Denman in the deep in previous assessments has moved. Tests were taken last night at Komas Bluff with 7.5% roe and 18.2cm fish, and North of Hornby with 8.8% roe and 17.9cm fish. A large body of fish, estimated at 5,000 tons was sampled off Columbia Beach last night, with 7.2% roe and 18.4 cm fish. Assessments this morning focused on the large body of fish that is building south of Chrome Island and Eagle Rock. Two sets were attempted but were unsuccessful due to the large number of sea lions. There was little found between Qualicum Beach and Nile Creek. There are reports of fish off the scallop farm (east of Bowser) and around Shingle Spit in Lambert Channel. Today's assessments will focus on the East Coasts of Denman and Hornby Islands, Lambert Channel to Chrome Island and from Nile Creek to Mapleguard Pt. The Western King joined the test program this morning. A spawn flight took place this morning, departing at 9:00am depart from Nanaimo. Congregations of sea lions and birds in lower Baynes Sound. SPAWN OBSERVED North of Hornby Island at Shields Pt., heavy for 1 nm. Test vessels and industry reps will be assessing this morning. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm) PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE: Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
