Assessment south of Tribune Bay and Flora Islet this morning found an estimated 4,500 tons in shallow schools as well as some skimmers. This morning Industry Test vessels Nita Maria and the Snow Cloud began assessment from Nanaimo and are working north. Viking Cavalier standing down from the test program for the time being. Assessment efforts today will focus from Nanaimo to Mapleguard Point, Baynes Sound and East coasts of Hornby and Denman Islands. A spawn flight departed from Nanaimo at 9:30 am. No spawn observed. Gulls and sea lions scattered from NW Bay to French Creek. A concentration of sea lions around Little Qualicum. No significant bird or sea lion activity through Baynes Sound or around Lazo. There are congregations of sea lions near Kitty Coleman and East Coast of Denman but greatly reduced from previous assessments. Sea lions and birds gathering toward the shallows in Tribune Bay, may indicate fish approaching beach, supporting soundings from this area this morning. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm) PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE: Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
