Assessment yesterday afternoon focused on Nile Creek to Mapleguard Point, Baynes Sound, Cape Lazo, East Coast of Denman Island and Lambert Channel. Bodies of fish in these areas remain relatively unchanged from previous assessments. An estimated 200 tons was found off Columbia Beach. Last night assessments focused on Tribune Bay/Lower Hornby southeast of Norris Rocks, 3 large schools were found in this area, total estimate for this area is 14,000 tons. Two test sets were made on the body of fish SE of Norris Rocks last night, 1 set was juveniles, average 15.0cm, 0% roe. The second set was further SE with 19.2cm fish and 2.2% roe. Sea lions continue to hamper test sampling efforts requiring test vessels to work in the same area to get a sample. This morning assessments indicate increasing abundance on the East Coast of Hornby Island between Flora Islet and Whaling Station Bay, and North of Hornby between Collishaw Pt and Shield's point with an estimated total biomass of 14,000 in this area. Lambert Channel was assessed, a small school was found in lower Lambert, east of Chrome Island. Today's assessments will focus on the east coasts of Hornby and Denman Islands, Tribune Bay/Lower Hornby, and Lower Baynes Sound. Poor weather may hamper assessments this morning. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. ROE TEST CODE:Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3-#spawned- #juvenile;(roe weight gm:fish weight gm) PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE: Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
