Assessments yesterday and last night concentrated on the East Denman/Hornby
Islands, North of Cape Lazo and Nile Creek to NW Bay. Bodies of fish remain
around Kitty Coleman, just North of Cape Lazo, East Coast of Denman near Komass
Bluff, and North of Hornby. A large body of fish was assessed at NW Bay around
Mistaken Island with an estimated 6,000 tons in the area, otherwise quiet from
NW Bay to Mapleguard Point. Today and tonight assessing Nile Creek to lower
Hornby, East Coast of Denman Island, Lambert Channel and Baynes Sound.

The spawn flight yesterday morning covered Nanaimo and Oyster River, around
Denman and Hornby Islands and also covered portions of the Sunshine Coast north
and south of Powell River. No spawn was observed. Concentrations of several
hundred sea lions were observed in the Kitty Coleman Beach area, East Coast of
Denman Island between Fillongley Park and Komas Bluff, and on the Lower Hornby
haulouts, (Norris Rocks and Flora Islets). A few scattered sea lions were
observed between Stillwater Bay and Grief Point on the mainland shore but there
was no indication of significant amounts of herring in the area.

Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete.

PUBLIC HEALTH AND AQUACULTURE:

Vessel Masters are reminded that there are numerous clam and oyster leases in
Baynes Sound. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas
creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge
of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters
within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act.
Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage
discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites
by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing
congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible.
