FN0084-Notice of Approval of the 2018/2019 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan

The 2018/2019 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) has
been approved by the Regional Director General, Pacific. The Draft IFMP was
posted on December 7, 2018 for a 34 day review (FN 1327: https://www-
ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fns-sap/index-eng.cfm?
pg=view_notice&DOC_ID=217017&ID=all). Thank you to those that provided comments
during that period.

The IFMP includes the 2018/2019 Pacific Herring stock assessment information,
and appendices on First Nations fisheries and commercial fisheries for food and
bait herring, special use herring, spawn on kelp, and roe herring.

As outlined in the IFMP, the Strait of Georgia area will be open to Roe and
Food & Bait commercial fisheries at a 20% harvest rate and the Prince Rupert
District and Central Coast areas will be open to Spawn-on-Kelp (SOK) commercial
fisheries. Precautionary management measures will be in place for commercial
SOK operations in Prince Rupert District and Central Coast, including license
reduction and herring enclosure consolidation. Precautionary closures will
continue to be in place in Haida Gwaii and the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

You may request an electronic copy of the IFMP from Victoria Postlethwaite
(victoria.postlethwaite@dfo-mpo.gc.ca), and the final copy will be posted on
the DFO library website shortly.
