Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Area 14 to 19)

Area 14 

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River, November 7 - 33,000 Chum - Target Escapement 60,000.  No 
assessment this week due to water conditions.
Big Qualicum River, November 14 - 11,100 Chum - Target Escapement 85,000.
Little Qualicum River, November 14 - 6,700 Chum - Target Escapement 85,000. 

Based on returns to date, no commercial fishing opportunities will occur in 
Area 14 in 2018.  Based on current escapement and run timing, total returns are 
expected to be below escapement targets in Area 14.

Areas 15 and 16 

An overflight of Jervis Inlet systems was conducted October 31 and November 7.  
Observations to date are of generally low returns to Area 15 and 16.
 
Commercial fishing opportunities will not take place in 2018 due to low pre-
season forecast levels of abundance and low observed returns.

Area 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River, November 9 - 82,000 - Target Escapement 40,000 
Cowichan River, November 13 - 181,000 - Target Escapement 160,000
Goldstream River, November 17 - 30,400 - Target Escapement 15,000

Commercial fisheries began in Area 17 targeting Nanaimo Chum on Wednesday Oct 
24. Total catch in Area 17 is estimated to be approximately 97,000 Chum. Area 
17 closed for the balance of the season to commercial gill net and seine 
November 15, 2018 at 18:00 hours.

Commercial fisheries began in Area 18 targeting Cowichan Chum on November 7. 
Total catch in Area 18 is estimated to be approximately 33,000 Chum. Area 18 
closed for the balance of the season to commercial gill net and seine November 
21, 2018 at 17:00 hours.

Commercial fisheries began in Area 19 targeting Goldstream Chum on November 9. 
Total catch in Area 19 is estimated to be approximately 4,900 Chum. Area 19 
closed for the balance of the season to commercial gill net and seine November 
19, 2018 at 17:00 hours.
