Fishery Notice

Chinook salmon in the San Juan River can be quite vulnerable to recreational 
fishing in the portion of the river downstream of the hatchery fence dependant 
on environmental conditions. Currently the San Juan River is experiencing low 
flows and warm water temperatures and significant numbers of chinook are 
expected to aggregate in this portion of the river and will be vulnerable to 
angling until conditions improve. 

Effective September 4 until October 5, 2018 a finfish closure will be in effect 
in the following areas:

That portion of the San Juan River from the hatchery counting fence downstream 
approximately 150 meters to square white boundary signs on either side of the 
river, and that portion of the Fairy Lake tributary approximately 5 meters 
downstream of the hatchery holding pens, indicated by square white boundary 
signs.  A map of closure will be provided on the DFO recreational fishery 
website and will also be posted in that area.

This closure is intended to allow chinook to migrate upstream when 
environmental conditions improve and also to allow the hatchery better 
opportunities to collect brood stock.

Please be aware that Rockfish Conservation Areas (RCAs) are also in effect in 
many of these areas. Fishers are responsible for knowing the restrictions that 
are in place in the areas that they are fishing. Descriptions of the RCAs can

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal 
waters of British Columbia.  

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head Recovery 
program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped chinook and 
coho salmon.  Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical information for 
coast-wide stock assessment.  Contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery Program
