FN0638-ABORIGINAL: Sockeye Retention in First Nations Food, Social and Ceremonial Fisheries in Most Southern BC Marine Waters

Effective 00:01 hours Wednesday, July 25, 2018 and until further notice,
retention of Sockeye will be permitted in food, social and ceremonial (FSC)
fisheries in the following Areas:
Areas 11 to 28, Areas 111, 121, 124 to 127 and Subareas 29-1 to 29-10.

In most years the three week rolling window closure to protect Early Stuart
Sockeye overlaps with existing management measures in place to protect Nimpkish
River and Sakinaw Lake Sockeye. First Nations should be aware of the existing
management measures that remain in place to protect Nimpkish and Sakinaw
Sockeye stocks. For Nimpkish Sockeye the Lewis Point boundary remains in effect
until late July. For Sakinaw origin Sockeye, these measures include a
restriction in First Nations FSC fisheries to prohibit the use of seine nets in
Johnstone Strait until July 25, 2018 and in the northern Strait of Georgia
until August 15, 2018.

For 2018, the Department has implemented additional management measures to
increase Chinook Salmon prey availability for Southern Resident Killer Whales
in the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Subareas 20-3, 20-4, and a portion of 20-5 west
of Otter Point), Gulf Islands (Subareas 18-2, 18-4, 18-5, and 18-9), and the
mouth of the Fraser River (Subareas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9, and 29-10). First Nations
are requested to avoid fishing in the vicinity of Killer Whales when they are
present in these areas.

First Nations are reminded to please submit any FSC catches to the Department
no later than close of business Wednesdays.

The next meeting of the Fraser River Panel will be the morning of Friday, July
27, 2018 and there will be an update following that meeting.
