Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday, November 19, 2015 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 37,000 chum (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 60,000 Big Qualicum River - 57,000 chum (Nov 17) - Target Escapement 85,000 Little Qualicum River - 71,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 85,000 Updated escapement estimates were only available this week for the Big Qualicum River which continues to track less than expected. High water levels did not allow for updated assessments of the Puntledge or Little Qualicum systems. No fisheries targeting Area 14 chum are planned for the coming week. Escapement levels will be evaluated next week to determine if there are further fishing opportunities available. Areas 15 and 16 No assessment information. Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast levels of abundance. Areas 17, 18, and 19 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Nanaimo River - 59,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 40,000 Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000 Cowichan River - 107,000 (Nov 17) - Target Escapement 160,000 Goldstream River - 16,000 (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 15,000 The Nanaimo Area gill net and seine fishery have closed for the balance of the season. In the Cowichan Area (Statistical Area 18) and Goldstream Area (Statistical Area 19) there were no commercial fisheries this past week. For Area 18 (Cowichan River), the escapement will be monitored over the weekend and both Area E and B Harvest Committees will be contacted should a commercial opportunity be warranted, otherwise the next MVI Chum Working Group Conference Call will be Thursday November 26 at 10:00 hours.
