Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Thursday, November 19, 2015

Area 14

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:

Puntledge River - 37,000 chum (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 60,000
Big Qualicum River - 57,000 chum (Nov 17) - Target Escapement 85,000
Little Qualicum River - 71,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 85,000

Updated escapement estimates were only available this week for the Big Qualicum
River which continues to track less than expected. High water levels did not
allow for updated assessments of the Puntledge or Little Qualicum systems. No
fisheries targeting Area 14 chum are planned for the coming week. Escapement
levels will be evaluated next week to determine if there are further fishing
opportunities available.

Areas 15 and 16

No assessment information.

Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast
levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:

Nanaimo River - 59,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 40,000
Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000
Cowichan River - 107,000 (Nov 17) - Target Escapement 160,000
Goldstream River - 16,000 (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 15,000

The Nanaimo Area gill net and seine fishery have closed for the balance of the
season. In the Cowichan Area (Statistical Area 18) and Goldstream Area
(Statistical Area 19) there were no commercial fisheries this past week. For
Area 18 (Cowichan River), the escapement will be monitored over the weekend and
both Area E and B Harvest Committees will be contacted should a commercial
opportunity be warranted, otherwise the next MVI Chum Working Group Conference
Call will be Thursday November 26 at 10:00 hours.

The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday, November 26, 2015.
