FN1266-Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update - November 12th, 2015
Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday November 12, 2015 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 37,000 chum (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 60,000. Big Qualicum River - 49,000 chum (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 85,000. Little Qualicum River - 65,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 85,000. Escapement estimates to Area 14 systems continue to track less than expected for this week resulting in total projected escapements at or slightly below the target levels for these systems. No fisheries targeting Area 14 chum are planned for the coming week. Escapement levels will be evaluated next week to determine if there are further fishing opportunities available. Areas 15 and 16 No assessment information. Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast levels of abundance. Areas 17, 18, and 19 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Nanaimo River - 51,000 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 40,000. Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000. Cowichan River - 102,000 (Nov 11) - Target Escapement 160,000. Goldstream River - 12,500 (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 15,000. The Nanaimo Area gillnet and seine fishery have continued. Effort for gillnets has been below 5 boats and there has been no seines operating since November 9. Catch in the Nanaimo Area is approximately 17,000 chum. In the Cowichan Area (Statistical Area 18) there was a seine fishery on Wednesday November 11th and the total catch for that fishery is estimated to be approx. 100-120,000 chum. In the Goldstream Area seines were open in a limited area nearer the head of the inlet. No catch has been reported for the area. Escapements will be monitored in both the Goldstream and Cowichan Rivers over the weekend and both Area E and B Harvest Committees will meet with DFO on Monday Nov 16 to discuss further fishing plans in the area.
