Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Thursday November 5, 2015

Area 14

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:

Puntledge River - 33,900 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 60,000.
Big Qualicum River - 28,000 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 85,000.
Little Qualicum River - 61,900 chum (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 85,000.

Escapement estimates to Area 14 systems were significantly less than expected
for this week resulting in total projected escapements at or slightly below the
target levels for these systems. As a result, no fisheries targeting Area 14
chum are planned for the coming week. Escapement levels will be evaluated next
week to determine if there are further fishing opportunities available.

Areas 15 and 16

No assessment information.

Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast
levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:

Nanaimo River - 51,000 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 40,000
Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000
Cowichan River - 95,000 (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 160,000
Goldstream River - 12,000 (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 15,000

There is a 2 day gill net and seine fishery in the Nanaimo Area (Statistical
Area 17). The Nanaimo River target escapement has been achieved but daily
escapement has tapered off. Total catch in the Nanaimo gill net fishery to
November 4 is approximately 10,000 chum. The gill net fishery has been
extended until further notice from 07:00-19:00 hours daily. The seine fishery
continuation will be discussed Friday November 6 to see if there is further
interest. In the Cowichan Area (Statistical Area 18) there will be a gill net
fishery Saturday November 7. Area E and B Harvest Committees will meet with
DFO on Monday November 9 to discuss further fishing plans in the area.

The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday November 12, 2015.
