Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday November 5, 2015 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 33,900 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 60,000. Big Qualicum River - 28,000 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 85,000. Little Qualicum River - 61,900 chum (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 85,000. Escapement estimates to Area 14 systems were significantly less than expected for this week resulting in total projected escapements at or slightly below the target levels for these systems. As a result, no fisheries targeting Area 14 chum are planned for the coming week. Escapement levels will be evaluated next week to determine if there are further fishing opportunities available. Areas 15 and 16 No assessment information. Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast levels of abundance. Areas 17, 18, and 19 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Nanaimo River - 51,000 chum (Nov 3) - Target Escapement 40,000 Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000 Cowichan River - 95,000 (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 160,000 Goldstream River - 12,000 (Nov 4) - Target Escapement 15,000 There is a 2 day gill net and seine fishery in the Nanaimo Area (Statistical Area 17). The Nanaimo River target escapement has been achieved but daily escapement has tapered off. Total catch in the Nanaimo gill net fishery to November 4 is approximately 10,000 chum. The gill net fishery has been extended until further notice from 07:00-19:00 hours daily. The seine fishery continuation will be discussed Friday November 6 to see if there is further interest. In the Cowichan Area (Statistical Area 18) there will be a gill net fishery Saturday November 7. Area E and B Harvest Committees will meet with DFO on Monday November 9 to discuss further fishing plans in the area. The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday November 12, 2015.
