FN0986-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Coho - Area 23 - Limited Effort Opening - September 7, 2015
This opening has been organized by the Area D Harvest Committee by agreement with the Area 23 Roundtable to be a limited effort fishery. One designated vessel may participate in this fishery. This opening will be closed on short notice if any other vessels attempt to participate. The following vessel was selected to participate in this opening: #1 GOODYEARS VRN# 28904 Gill nets open for 4 hours, commencing 20:00 hours to 24:00 hours Monday September 7, 2015 in the following area: That portion of Subarea 23-1 bounded in the north by a line beginning at the light house at Discovery Marina westerly to the navigation light on Hohm Island then due west to the opposite shore and bounded in the south by a line from Polly Point to Stamp Point. The target species is coho and incidentally caught chinook and sockeye may be retained. Pink, chum and steelhead may not be retained. Gillnets with maximum mesh sizes of 159 mm (6.25") will be permitted to have a maximum depth of 90 meshes. All gillnets are required to be a maximum of 183 m long (600'), a maximum hang ratio of 3:1, and a cork-line to web distance minimum of 0 cm and maximum of 2.0 m. Variation Order No. 2015-Sal-23-GN-19 The target catch for this opening is coho with an anticipated chinook by catch. This fishery in conjunction with the First Nations Food Social and Ceremonial fishery and will be sampled to show the age and sex composition of the catch and will help determine the viability of future fisheries targeting coho and small male chinook bycatch. New for 2015 Please note that all Salmon Gill Net fisheries have new requirements for recording and reporting. See FN0482 and FN0579 outlining these changes for Area D fishers. Refer to your 2015/2016 conditions of licence for complete changes. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC waters. By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, and where these turtles are using our waters. If you see a sea turtle, please call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663). Please include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the location, and time of sighting. Fishers are requested to avoid fishing among birds and not to run the line if birds are near the net. Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which are entangled and to release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the water. Please check all birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg. If a bird is banded please contact Laurie Wilson with the band number and capture date and location at 1 866-431-2473 (BIRD) or by the email below. Handle birds with gloves, double bag dead birds and label each bird with date, time, and location and store them on ice. Please call your local patrol vessel to organize pick-up or drop them off at a local DFO office. Alternatively, please send photographs of birds with a reference object such as a coin, and the date, time and location to laurie.wilson@ec.gc.ca.
