FN1239-COMMERCIAL - Invertebrates: Shrimp Trawl South Coast - Shrimp Survey Biomass Estimates and Catch Ceilings - SMA 14.

Shrimp biomass surveys were conducted between September 23 - October 2, 2025 allowing for biomass estimates to be defined for shrimp in Shrimp Management Area (SMA) 14.

SMA Species Total Biomass PA Harvest Harvest Catch
Estimate (t) Zone Rate Ceiling (t)

14 Smooth Pink 407.02 Healthy 35% 142.5
14 Sidestripe 15.3 Cautious 0.175% 0.03
(age 2+)

The estimated biomass for Sidestripe Shrimp is just above the Limit Reference Point, and too close to the Critical Zone, so the area will not open to fishing. The resulting harvest rate would essentially be 0 and it wouldn't be practical to open the area with a 0.03 t (59 lbs) catch ceiling on Sidestripe Shrimp. The ceiling could be reached quite quickly and the area would have to close shortly after opening. An assessment on stock status, indicating that both Smooth Pink and Sidestripe Shrimp abundance are well above the Limit Reference Points and out of the Critical Zone, will be required prior to any future fishing opportunity in these areas.

Management measures, as defined in the Management plan, will continue to be in effect. Licence holders are responsible for ensuring arrangements are in place to meet all licence conditions.
