FN1238-COMMERCIAL - Invertebrates: Shrimp Trawl South Coast - Shrimp Survey Biomass Estimates and Catch Ceilings - SMA GSTE and 16.

Shrimp biomass surveys were conducted between October 2 - 6, 2025 allowing for biomass estimates to be defined for shrimp in Shrimp Management Areas (SMA) GSTE and 16.

SMA Species Total Biomass PA Harvest Harvest Catch
Estimate (t) Zone Rate Ceiling (t)

16 Smooth & Spiny Pink 84.76 Cautious 30% 25.4
16 Sidestripe 27.2 Critical 0% 0
(age 2+)
GSTE Smooth Pink 330.8 Healthy 35% 115.8
GSTE Sidestripe 27.2 Cautious 19% 4.5
(age 2+)

As the Sidestripe Shrimp biomass in SMA 16 is below the Limit Reference Point, and falls within the Critical Zone, the area will not open to fishing. An assessment on stock status, indicating that both pink and Sidestripe Shrimp abundance are above the Limit Reference Points and out of the Critical Zone, will be required prior to any future fishing opportunity in these areas.

The survey determined that Sidestripe Shrimp biomass in SMA GSTE is in the Cautious Zone, and Smooth Pink Shrimp biomass is in the Healthy Zone. A small harvest opportunity is available with catch ceilings of 115.8 (255,293 lb) Smooth Pink shrimp and 4.5 t (9,921 lb) Sidestripe Shrimp.

Management measures, as defined in the Management plan, will continue to be in effect. Licence holders are responsible for ensuring arrangements are in place to meet all licence conditions.

A separate fishery notice will announce an opening date for SMA GSTE.
