FN0646-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: 2025 Commercial Electronic Monitoring Evaluation Project Pacific Salmon Commission - Southern Endowment Fund

Beginning in 2025, a three-year phased implementation approach is underway to achieve the objective that all commercial salmon fisheries will be subject to comprehensive, fisher-independent catch monitoring. The department (DFO) is engaging with commercial salmon fishing fleets to develop an economically feasible catch monitoring program that will be effective in meeting this objective.

To support implementation, DFO is soliciting commercial salmon fishing fleets for individual fishing vessels with all gear types that may be interested in participating in an electronic monitoring (EM) and artificial intelligence (AI) evaluation project being jointly managed by DFO and Archipelago Marine Research, under grant funding provided by the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) Southern Endowment Fund. The EM/AI equipment would be supplied, installed, and the data reviewed at no cost to the fish harvesters.

The primary objective of the project is to evaluate the use of EM and AI technologies on commercial salmon fishing vessels to determine the efficacy of EM and AI in providing commercial salmon fishing information such as time, area, location, catch counts, catch utilization (retained/released), salmon species identification, bycatch, and condition at release. The data will be used to directly compare the At-Sea Observer (ASO) collected data with the EM collected data to evaluate the efficacy of the EM equipment.

Fish harvesters interested in participating in this project, and for additional details, should direct their enquiries to Dennis Klassen at the contact information below.
