FN1369-SANITARY - Precautionary Emergency Closure 14.ba for oysters on the west side of Denman Island, Baynes Sound, Subarea 14-8 including BC Landfiles #0251275, #1409454, #0262525, #0227036, #1402293, #1411178, #0262501, #1402294, #1402446, #1403230, #0298458, #1413888 and #1405492, PSN-2024-712.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has received multiple reports of illness linked to the west side of Denman Island, Baynes Sound in Subarea 14-8. Therefore, effective immediately there is a harvest prohibition for oysters on a portion of the west side of Denman Island, Baynes Sound, Subarea 14-8 including BC Landfiles #0251275, #1409454, #0262525, #0227036, #1402293, #1411178, #0262501, #1402294, #1402446, #1403230, #0298458, #1413888 and #1405492, until further notice. This includes the transfer of oysters to or from the Aquaculture Facilities listed above, with the exception of seed transfers to the facilities. Due to potential contamination, the Pacific Region Interdepartmental Shellfish Committee agrees a closure is warranted for oysters at these aquaculture facilities until further notice. As per Section 6.4.3 of the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program Manual, the CFIA is recommending that the following area be placed into closed status https://inspection.canada.ca/food-guidance-by-commodity/fish/canadian-shellfish-sanitation-program/eng/1527251566006/1527251566942?chap=0#s6c3. Precautionary Emergency Closure 14.ba - The waters and intertidal foreshore of that portion of Subarea 14-8 inside a line commencing at 49°31.936' N 124°49.298' W, thence southeast to a point on land at 49°32.012' N 124°49.154' W, thence southeast following the shoreline to a point in water at 49°30.187' N 124°46.107' W, thence southwest to a point in water at 49°30.122' N 124°46.293' W, thence northwest back to the point of commencement; including BC Land Registry Aquaculture Tenures #0251275, #1409454, #0262525, #0227036, #1402293, #1411178, #0262501, #1402294, #1402446, #1403230, #0298458, #1413888 and #1405492. [NAD83] Note that this notice does not describe other sanitary closures which may be in effect, or Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP, red tide) and other marine biotoxin closures.
