FN1345-Amendment to FN1342 - SANITARY - Emergency Sanitary Closure 14.aw for oysters off the west side of Denman Island, Baynes Sound, a portion of Subarea 14-8 which includes BC Land Registry Shellfish Aquaculture Tenure #1413888, PSN-2024-695.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has received reports of illness linked to BC Aquaculture Tenure Landfile #1413888. Therefore, effective immediately there is a harvest prohibition for oysters from BC Aquaculture Tenure Landfile #1413888, in a portion of Subarea 14-8, on the west side of Denman Island, Baynes Sound, until further notice. This includes the transfer of oysters to or from the Aquaculture Facility listed above, with the exception of seed transfers to the facility. As per Section 6.4.3 of the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program Manual, the CFIA is recommending that the following area be placed into closed status https://inspection.canada.ca/food-guidance-by-commodity/fish/canadian-shellfish-sanitation-program/eng/1527251566006/1527251566942?chap=0#s6c3. Emergency Closure Area 14.aw - Aquaculture Tenure Landfile #1413888 The waters and the intertidal foreshore of BC Land Registry aquaculture tenure #1413888, Subarea 14-8, off of the west coast of Denman Island in Baynes Sound, inside a line drawn from a point in water at 49°30.431' north latitude and 124°46.472' west longitude, thence southeast to a point in water at 49°30.374' north latitude and 124°46.344' west longitude, thence southwest to a point in water at 49°30.337' north latitude and 124°46.402' west longitude, thence northwest to a point in water at 49°30.406' north latitude and 124°46.509' west longitude. [NAD 83] Note that this notice does not describe other sanitary closures which may be in effect, or Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP, red tide) and other marine biotoxin closures. For an area to be open and safe for harvesting, both biotoxin and sanitary need to be open.
