The Area D Harvest Committee is commencing their selection process in anticipation of any potential Chum Limited Effort Fishery (LEF) that may occur during the 2024 season. Area D licence holders wishing to participating in the draw should apply via email to:

Email applications must state clearly:
-Vessel name;
-CFV;
-Vessel operator's name;
-Vessel operator's telephone number; and email address
-The area(s) you are interested in: Area 25, Area 26, and/or East Coast of Vancouver Island (ECVI)

Only email applications will be accepted and the deadline for applying is:

August 27, 2024 at 12:00 hours.

To ensure your application is valid all fishers MUST receive a return confirmation email. Please submit only one email indicating that you wish to participate.

A draw will be held between the dates of August 26-30, 2024 and the results will be posted on the DFO Fishery Notice system.

There will be two draws for the West Coast of Vancouver Island (WCVI); one each for Areas 25 and 26. There will be only one draw for potential opportunities in all areas of the East Coast of Vancouver Island (ECVI).

If selected for an Area D LEF opportunity, selected fishers will be notified and will have 24 hours to confirm participation within the fishery. Once confirmed, selected fishers will be ineligible for any other LEF opportunity in 2024 and are expected to participate in their confirmed fishery.

Potential Chum LEF opportunities for 2024 include:

Area 25

Based on the pre-season Chum forecast for Conuma(Tlupana) stocks, there is a potential Chum LEF opportunity in Tlupana Inlet, Nootka Sound.

Details:
-Starting as early as September 25, 2024
-Day-time fishery
-Number of vessels to be determined
-Gear: Maximum gill net length 375 m. Minimum mesh-size 149 mm (5-7/8 inches). Maximum depth 60 meshes. Maximum hang ratio 3:1, cork-line to web distance min 0 cm, max 2 m.

Area 26:

Based on the pre-season Chum forecast for Area 26, there is a potential Chum LEF opportunity in Kyuquot Sound.

-Starting as early as September 25, 2024
-Day-time fishery
-4 vessels
-Gear: Maximum gill net length 375 m. Minimum mesh-size 149 mm (5-7/8 inches). Maximum depth 60 meshes. Maximum hang ratio 3:1, cork-line to web distance min 0 cm, max 2 m.

ECVI:

The 2024 Salmon Outlook for Inner South Coast Chum is Category 1-2 (below average). However, in the event that there is sufficient abundance, there may be opportunities for the Area D Commercial Salmon Allocation Framework (CSAF) demonstration fisheries in Areas 13 and 14.

If other LEF opportunities are identified in-season, they will be announced via Fishery Notice.
