FN0887-Salmon: Sockeye and Pink - Areas 11 to 29 - Fraser River Panel Update - August 22, 2023- Amendment to FN0878

The Fraser River Panel met August 22, 2023 to receive an update on the migration of the Fraser Sockeye and Fraser Pink run to date and review the status of migration conditions in the Fraser River watershed. Additional information can be found at the following:

Mixed-stock Sockeye-directed food, social and ceremonial (FSC) fisheries are not anticipated to open until Fraser Sockeye total allowable catch (TAC) is identified. Very limited fishing opportunities directed at Chinook Salmon for ceremonial purposes have occurred to date in the Fraser River with non-retention restrictions in place for Sockeye. As per the Integrated Fisheries Management Plan, limited terminal fisheries for individual Fraser Sockeye spawning populations may be considered if the projected number of spawners is expected to exceed the freshwater productive capacity of the system, measured as Spawners at Maximum Sustainable Yield, taking into account migration and environmental conditions. FSC harvesters in marine approach areas and the Fraser River are requested to check for the opening times and any restrictions in their local area for Fraser Sockeye and Pink salmon.

Commercial and recreational fisheries directed at Fraser Sockeye remain closed at this time.

Commercial fisheries in Area 29 directed at Fraser Pink salmon, with non-retention of sockeye, are under development. Recreational fisheries for Fraser Pink salmon, with non-retention of sockeye, are also under consideration in Areas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9, 29-10 and 29-11 to 29-17. Any fishery openings will be announced via Fishery Notice.

The next in-season meeting of the Fraser River Panel is scheduled to occur on August 25, 2023.
