FN0466-Pacific Region - North Pacific Fisheries Commission VMS Requirement for Sablefish Seamount Fishery
Harvesters are hereby notified of changes to the Sablefish Seamount fishery as part of new requirements approved under the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC). A new Conservation and Management Measure (CMM) was adopted by the NPFC at the annual meeting in February 2021, and is expected to come into force July 10, 2021. This measure requires any vessels participating in the Seamount fishery to utilize a satellite-based Vessel Monitoring System (VMS)that transmits VMS data in real-time. The requirements are in addition to the current monitoring requirements for 100% at-sea observation coverage in the domestic commercial Sablefish fishery. As the Seamount fishery is located in the NPFC Convention Area (CA), any vessels participating in this fishery are subject to the NPFC CMMs. More information on CMMs can be found at www.npfc.int. A list of VMS unit models that are approved for use in Canada can be located at https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fisheries-peches/sdc-cps/vessel-monitoring-surveillance-navire/approved-approuvee-eng.html.
