Effective 07:00 hours Tuesday, November 26 to 17:00 hours Wednesday, November 27, 2019 a portion of Subarea 28-13 will be open for a limited, small-scale Food, Social and Ceremonial harvest of Softshell (Mya arenaria) and Varnish (Nuttallia obscurata) clams. Only individuals designated by the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation are authorized to participate in this fishery. The target species in this fishery are Softshell (Mya arenaria) and Varnish (Nuttallia obscurata) clams only. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation Fishery Manager will communicate a description of the open area to Tsleil-Waututh Nation community members. The open area is also listed in the Tsleil-Waututh Food, Social, Ceremonial Intertidal Bivalves Community Harvest Plan. The harvest sites are very specific and all harvesters must consult with Tsleil-Waututh Treaty, Lands and Resources Department staff before harvesting. All aspects of the communal licence will be enforced. Fish harvesters are advised to contact their band for a copy of the conditions of their fishing licence. Fish harvesters must be in possession of a valid communal licence from the Tsleil-Waututh Treaty, Lands and Resources Department. Fish harvesters are asked to report their harvest quantities to the Tsleil- Waututh Treaty, Lands and Resources Department. Recent acceptable water quality and biotoxin monitoring results permit this opening. Notes: A monitor shall be present during all landing of catch to record the number and weight of Softshell (Mya arenaria) and Varnish (Nuttallia obscurata) clams delivered. Fishers are advised that bivalve shellfish are susceptible to Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) and other forms of contamination and closures may occur. All bivalve shellfish harvesters must check before harvesting to ensure there aren't any closures in the vicinity. FOR MORE INFORMATION: For more information harvesters should call the Tsleil-Waututh Nation Treaty, Lands and Resources Department at (604) 924-4161 or Marisa Keefe, DFO Fraser and Interior Area A/Resource Manager at (604) 666-6390.
