FN0600-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Troll - Area F - 2019 Chinook and Coho head retention and delivery requirements.
All vessels fishing under Area F licences not listed in Fishery Notice 0586 are required to ensure that all Chinook and Coho salmon heads removed, prior to off- loading, are retained and delivered in accordance with Part 1, Subsection 13(1) (a) of the 2019 Area F Conditions of Licence. The number of vessels required to retain heads in 2019 is 30% of licensees. Compliance with Chinook and Coho head retention requirements at this rate is essential to achieve the sample rate target as outlined by the Pacific Salmon Treaty. Furthermore good compliance with salmon head retention requirements is required to continue with the low proportion of vessels required to retain heads in the future. Heads must be stored and delivered using special purpose bags and labels. These bags and labels are supplied free of charge by the Department and can be obtained in three ways. 1) Pick them up at the following departmental offices: Commissionaire, main entrance, 3190 Hammond Bay Rd., Nanaimo; Mail Room,, 2nd floor reception, 200 - 401 Burrard St, Vancouver; Front counter, main entrance,315 - 940 Alder St. Campbell River Front Counter, main entrance, 4706 Tebo Ave., Port Alberni; Front Counter, main entrance, 8585 Wollason Rd, Port Hardy; Front counter, 417 2nd Ave W, Prince Rupert; Front Counter, 137 Bay St, Queen Charlotte City; Front Counter, 12551 No. 1 Road, Richmond; and Front Counter, 4250 Commerce Circle, Victoria. 2) Make arrangements for delivery by contacting the Department toll-free at 1- 866-483-9994. 3) Get them from coded-wire tag samplers at fish plants. As an alternative to retaining the whole head, fishers can opt to keep the upper portion of the head extending from the tip of the snout to a cut travelling from the top of the head, passing 1 cm behind the eye, and ending at the back corner of the mouth. There is no need to retain the lower jaws or gill plates. Heads must be kept frozen until delivery. To maximize the run timing information obtained through coded wire tag sampling of the heads, each bag must contain heads/snouts from fish caught within the same week (where weeks run from Sunday to Saturday). Please refer to Part 1, Subsection 13(1)(a) of your Conditions of Licence for complete head retention and delivery requirements. If you do not catch any Chinook or Coho under this licence in the 2019 salmon season, or you deliver all your catch head on, please disregard this notice.
