Subject:
FN0357-AQUACULTURE - Wet Storage Authorizations are Required for Shellfish Aquaculture Facilities

Wet storage is the temporary storage of live harvested bivalve shellfish on an
aquaculture facility, sourced from approved licensed wild commercial fisheries,
or from other licensed aquaculture facilities.

As of January 15, 2019, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is the lead
authorizing agent for wet storage activities on valid licensed shellfish
aquaculture facilities and all previous wet storage approvals from the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency are no longer valid. Anyone conducting wet storage of
harvested bivalves without the appropriate authorizations from DFO may result
in prosecution, fines and seizure of product.

As previously outlined in the two Fisheries and Oceans Fishery Notices FN0607
https://notices.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fns-sap/index-eng.cfm?
pg=view_notice&DOC_ID=210730&ID=all), and FN0073 https://notices.dfo-
mpo.gc.ca/fns-sap/index-eng.cfm?pg=view_notice&DOC_ID=218439&ID=all the current
shellfish aquaculture condition of licence (section 3.1) allows for transfers
of wild Pacific Oyster to aquaculture facilities. However, the conditions of
licence do not authorize such movements of wild Manila Clams, or other bivalve
shellfish.

For an application or to answer questions relating to wet storage on licensed
shellfish aquaculture facilities, please contact Aquaculture Management staff:
