ROE HERRING INFORMATION BULLETIN: 35 Strait of Georgia Roe Herring Season Summary DATE: April 15, 2019 The herring stock biological sampling and sounding assessment program in the Strait of Georgia concluded for the season on Monday, March 20, 2019. Spawn flights concluded on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. The spawn dive survey concluded on Saturday, April 13, 2019. The Strait of Georgia roe herring seine fishery opened on Saturday, March 9, 2019 and closed on March 15, 2019 with fishing occurring on March 9 and 10 from NW Bay to Brant Pt. and on March 13 from Qualicum Beach to French Creek. The total validated catch is 7,177.934 tons of the 8,311 ton quota. The Strait of Georgia roe herring gill net fishery opened on Friday, March 15, 2019 and closed on Thursday, April 4, 2019. Fishing took place on the east coast of Denman Island, the south coast of Denman Island, Chrome Island and along the Vancouver Island shoreline from Mapleguard Point to Qualicum Beach. Total validated catch is 8,373.717 tons of the 11,472 ton quota. Total spawn length observed on the flight program in 2019 in the Strait of Georgia major stock area is 40.7nm, all in Area 14. There was an additional 2nm of spawn in Area 17 that was detected by the dive charter. There were also reports of minor spawns in Areas 12, 13, 16, 17, 28. The tonnage of stocks and length of spawn for each area provided in season are estimates only and do not reflect the biomass of stocks in the area.
