ROE HERRING INFORMATION BULLETIN: 32 DATE: April 1, 2019 The roe herring gill net fishery opened at 07:30 hours March 15 and remains open until further notice. The roe herring gill net fishery has not been active for several days. Total estimated catch based on validations is 8,371 tons of the 11,472 ton quota. The roe herring seine fishery closed March 15 at 16:00 hours with a total validated catch of 7,178 tons of the 8,311 ton quota. A spawn flight was completed today leaving from Nanaimo and covering the area north to Deep Bay, along the north east side of Denman Island to Fillongley Park, around Hornby Island, around Gabriola Island and through Stuart Channel, south as far as Chemainus. The only spawn that was observed was from Nile Creek to Bowser - approximately 1.7 nm light to medium intensity. This spawn was likely active over the last couple of days as it was only slightly active today and starting to wash out. Total length of spawn observed to date in the Strait of Georgia is 36.8 NM. The next spawn flight is planned for Wednesday morning. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete. Disposal of human waste into waters near shellfish harvest areas creates potentially serious health risks for shellfish consumers. The discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian coastal waters within 3 nautical miles of land is banned under the Canada Shipping Act. Vessels participating in the herring fishery are required to abide by sewage discharge regulations and are requested to minimize impact to aquaculture sites by utilizing marinas, anchoring in existing sanitary closures and minimizing congregations of vessels near shellfish aquaculture sites as much as possible. NANAIMO HARBOUR NOTICE: TO ALL CFVs participating in the HERRING FISHERY IN AND AROUND THE NANAIMO AREA in FEBRUARY/MARCH 2019 Please be advised that the EAST SIDE of the Concrete pier (Visiting Vessel Pier) is closed to all Transient Vessel Traffic. The east side is the outside of the Pier, the side closet to Protection/ Newcastle Islands. Under NO circumstances are ANY TRANSIENT vessels allowed to tie on that side. This includes CFVs.
