Central Coast Herring Bulletin #4 March 22, 2019: The charter vessel Windward Isle sounded Kitasu Bay throughout the day and evening March 20, no additional fish were sounded. It appears there are no additional herring in the bay to back the current spawn which continued to expand throughout Kitasu Bay on March 20. Windward Isle left Kitasu Bay during the night for Spiller Inlet. On March 21 they made a successful set near Percival Narrows. On March 22 morning, they made a successful set in Upper Spiller Channel. CCG Vector travelled from Kitasu Bay to Cecilia Island to conduct shoreline surveys in the area and will remain in the Lambard Inlet area for a few days. The first herring flight was done March 21 at 1400hrs. Both Northern and Southern routes were flown (excepting Aristazable Island and Lambard Inlet areas). Very little bird or wildlife activity was noted, Lambard Inlet areas will be assessed by boat. On March 21, spawning was noted in the back end of Takush Harbour, herring were noted at surface. There was a small spawn on the South side of Gikumi Point, a larger spawn halfway between Gikumi Point and Mud Bay which extends to far side of Mud Bay and into McBride Bay. A spawn has been observed March 22, from Olive Point toward Boswell Inlet. Spawn has also been observed at the NE Corner of Denison Island. Definitions: Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify NFF - No Fish Found Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin ROE TEST CODE: Date;Location;roe yield;fish size;males:females;#1-#2-#3- #spawned-#juvenile;(roe weight g:fish weight g) FOR MORE INFORMATION: Bradley Koroluk 250-799-5127
