Central Coast Herring Bulletin #3
March 20, 2019: 

The charter vessel Windward Isle has reached Bella Bella area and moved to 
Spiller Channel to attempt a set on the reported growing spawn near Mosquito 
Bay evening of March 19.  Windward Isle was not able to make a test set and has 
moved to Kitasu Bay to sound and attempt a test set on the spawn observed in 
Kitasu Bay.   

CCG Vector is in Kitasu Bay conducting shoreline surveys for spawn in Kitasu 
Bay and area.

Area 6 Spawn: 
Spawn was observed in Kitasu Bay near Parsons Anchorage, spawn length was 0.25 
nautical miles from 52°31'20.26"N / 128°44'38.31"W to 52°31'9.61"N / 128°
44'22.11"W, with herring along shore at spawn.

Area 7 Spawn: Two small spawns reported in Spiller Channel near Mosquito Bay.  
Appear to be washed out, Windward Isle was unable to set on fish as they were 
too close to beach. Orcas, whales and sea lions noted in Spiller area.

Kwakume Point ---------------- March 19, 450 tons on bottom

Area 8 Total: ---------------- 800 tons
 
Area 8 Spawn: Spawn was reported in west end of Pruth Bay March 19.  Spawn 
extends NE to Goose Grass Bay with a large mass of herring still in area.   
 

Area 10:

Area 10 Spawn: A small spawn was reported at Takush Harbour at Gikumi Point, on 
March 18 and 19 but dying off with no more fish to back the spawn.  


The first scheduled herring spawn flight has been rescheduled for March 21, 
2019 to account for the active spawn.   


Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
