North Coast Herring Update
Area 5 - Kitkatla

March 15, 2019 - 21:00 hrs: 
The Franciscan #1 arrived in Kitkatla Inlet today and sounding operations began 
in the afternoon. 550-750 tonnes and numerous scratches observed from Porcher 
Peninsula to Gravel pit and along the West side of Gurd. 

Winds picked up in the evening. Plans to survey remaining areas in Kitkatla 
Inlet morning of March 16.

Porcher Peninsula - March 15: 550-750t
Gravel Pit - March 15: Scratches
Gurd Island West - March 15: Scratches

March 16, 2019 - 21:00 hours

Operations were slightly delayed this morning due to inclement weather. Small 
schools observed on top of Gurd. ~2500 tonnes observed around Kitkatla creek. A 
test set was made at Kitkatla Creek. 

Comments: lots of blood in the roe and the males are firm. 

Sounding operations will continue on the west side of Gurd this evening. An 
updated will be provided at 09:35 hours tomorrow (March 17).

March 17, 2019 - 22:45 hours

This morning, 2500 - 3000 t observed at Kitkatla Creek.  Approximately 700-800t 
observed at Dries inlet. No fish found at Serpentine Inlet. ~200 tonnes found 
at top of Gurd.  275 t and numerous small scratch schools observed along 
Porcher Peninsula.  3 scratch schools observed at Absalom Island to Coquitlam 
Island. By the late afternoon, fish observed along Porcher Peninsula appear to 
have moved to top of Gurd.

This evening, a test set was made at Kitkatla Creek. Large body of fish 
appeared to have dissipated.

Definitions:
Scratches - Herring present in small schools 1 to 2 tons
Skimmer - Herring spread out near the surface, difficult to quantify
Fish on bottom (FOB) - Herring too close to the bottom to quantify
NFF - No Fish Found
Washed out spawn - Spawn that is coming to an end
Miles - Means nautical miles for this bulletin
