DATE: Feb 22 WCVI Area 23 Barkley Sound 400 tonnes (Test Vessel Estimate) Deep Hole off Ucluelet Feb 20: Test Vessel Proud Canadian - Small school in deep hole approx. 200 tonnes. No fish sounded inside western shore of Barkley Sound. Feb 21: Test vessel reporting fish inside Barkley Sound near Forbes Island (fish showing on sounder but moving quickly estimate approximately 200 tonnes. No test sets taken to date. Feb 21: First Nation charter transiting area raked at Cabbage Rocks, one layer of eggs deposited but no active spawn observed. Area 24 Clayoquot Sound Jan 15 to 30: Hesquiaht Harbour small spawn near Anton Spit and western shore of inner harbour (surface survey done) Feb 19: Herring sounded in Hesquiaht Harbour unable to determine an estimate, lots of bird and sea lion activity but no active spawn. Area 25 Nootka Sound Feb 17: Herring sounded in the deep hole of Yuquot Point by local First Nation contact. Area 25 Esperanza Inlet Feb 17: possible spawn reported in Nuchatlitz by Nootka Air. Total Herring WCVI: 400 tons Please note: The primary objective of the herring test seine vessel program is to collect herring biological samples from Areas 23-25 for stock assessment purposes (e.g. size of fish, age distribution of fish in each sample). Herring stock locations and estimates are collected as part of the stock assessment program to locate herring stocks in as part of the sampling process to collect the biological samples, and do not cover all areas. The tonnage of stocks for each area provided in this notice, are in season estimates only, and do not reflect the biomass of stocks in the area. The estimates of stock biomass will be provided in the analysis which will be undertaken in the post season period, following the collection of biological samples as well as herring spawn distribution and abundance data. The vessel selected to collect biological samples for herring stock assessment in 2019 is the F/V Proud Canadian with skipper Philip Dupuis. The vessel started Feb 20 sounding in Area 23 and weather permitting will be travelling to Area 24 in the next few days to begin assessment work in Area 24. The test vessel will operate on WCVI for 20 days in 2019. No fish will be retained for sale. Spawn flights will begin the week of Feb 24. A vessel based dive team aboard the F/V Pachena with Skipper Anare Rokotuiwakaya is scheduled to begin dive surveys throughout the major stock assessment area (Areas 23-25) for 19 days in 2019. The Pachena is scheduled to begin surveys around March 5. A shore based dive team aboard the Seaveyor 1 with skipper Darren Horler is scheduled to begin dive surveys along the East and West Coast of Vancouver island throughout the major stock assessment areas (Areas 23-25, 27, SOG) for 20 days. The shore based dive survey crew is scheduled to begin surveys February 24.
