Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)


Area 14 
Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River - 28,000 chum - Oct 24 - target escapement 60,000.  
Big Qualicum River - 6,125 chum - Oct 24 - target escapement 85,000.
Little Qualicum River - 1,836 chum - Oct 25 - target escapement 85,000. 

Gill nets opened for 12 hours from 08:00 hours to 20:00 hours Friday, October 
27, 2017.  Refer to Fishery Notice FN1135 for full details of opened areas.  


Areas 15 and 16: 
Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2017 due to low forecast 
levels of abundance.


Areas 17, 18, and 19:
Chum escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River - 38,975 - Oct 22 - target escapement 40,000. 
Chemainus River - unknown - target escapement 50,000.
Cowichan River - 10,800 - Oct 24 - target escapement 160,000.
Goldstream River - 276 - Oct 25 - target escapement 15,000.

There are Didson counters operating on the Nanaimo, Cowichan and the Chemainus 
Rivers. Stream surveys on the Goldstream River started Oct 18. 

Commercial gill net and troll fisheries began on Oct 24 and seines began on Oct 
25 in the Nanaimo area targeting surplus Nanaimo River chum. These fisheries 
are open until further notice. Total catch for all groups for Oct 24 and 25 is 
approximately 18,000 chum.

There will not be a commercial fishery in Area 18 or 19 this week. Information 
from the Cowichan River will be monitored over the weekend and a conference 
call with the Cowichan Harvest Roundtable is scheduled for 13:00 hours Monday 
October 30, to review updated information on Cowichan chum. 

The next Mid Vancouver Island chum update will be Friday November 3.
