FN1145-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net and Seine - Chum - Areas 21 and 121 - Information Update
Due to current escapement levels and low catch rates in the gill net fisheries to date, there are no commercial fisheries planned for the week of October 28 to November 3, 2017. Conditions will continue to be monitored daily throughout the week and changes to fishery plans could be announced on short notice. The estimated escapement to Nitinat Lake to October 26 is 160,000. Test fishing and brood stock capture has remained very slow indicating much fewer fish than expected moving into the lake. The current estimated escapement is well below the October 28 target of 225,000. At this rate the minimum escapement target of 225,000 for the lake and river may not be achieved. The Area E gill net catch to date is approximately 36,000 chum in three days of fishing. The fishery on October 1 with a fleet of 104 boats caught 9,000 chum. The fishery on October 8 and 9 with a fleet of 74 boats caught 27,000 chum. The hatchery is currently at 8 million eggs collected and in holding fish. The egg target for Nitinat Hatchery is 30 million. It is unlikely the hatchery will meet the target but, fishing continues in the lake and river for brood stock capture.
