FN1102-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net and Seine - Chum - Area 21 and 121 - Information Update

Due to current escapement levels and low catch rates in the gill net fisheries
to date, there are no commercial fisheries planned for the week of October 25
to the 28. Conditions will continue to be monitored daily throughout the week
and changes to fishery plans could be announced on short notice.

The estimated escapement to Nitinat Lake up to October 15 was 100,000. Weather
has hampered further assessment this week, however, test fishing and brood
stock capture has remained very slow indicating much fewer fish than expected
moving into the lake. The current estimated escapement is well below the
October 22 target of 175,000 and is tracking below the minimum escapement
target of 225,000.

The Area E gill net catch to date is approximately 36,000 chum in three days of
fishing. The fishery on October 1 with a fleet of 104 boats caught 9,000
chum. The fishery on October 8 and 9 with a fleet of 74 boats caught 27,000
chum.

The hatchery has lost 6 million eggs due to a partial lake turnover and sea
lion predation. It is currently back up to 8 million eggs in holding again,
with a target of 30 million. Fishing continues in the lake and river for brood
stock capture.
