Invertebrates, Butter Clam - Area "D"

The next opening in Area D is as follows:

Fishing for butter clam by hand picking is open from 17:00 hours October 20, 
2017 until further notice in the following area:

Subarea 14-11

The fishery at Seal Island/Sandy Island in Subarea 14-11 is subject to an 
annual quota of 32,000 pounds.  All processors who obtain butter clam from this 
area must report their landings the following day to David Fogtmann (250 339-
3799) so that the quota can be monitored.  Consultations with user groups must 
take place before any additional quota will be considered.

This fishery is subject to closure on short notice due to PSP concerns.

Harvesting is prohibited in all Sanitary Contamination Closures. 
Harvesters are responsible for checking Fishery Notices for the Bivalve 
Shellfish Marine Biotoxin Updates, as recommended by the Canadian Food 
Inspection Agency and issued by DFO to confirm the species and area is open to 
harvest.

Harvesters are advised to observe the boundaries of any intertidal tenures.  
Harvesting on any tenures is prohibited under this fishery opening unless 
authorized by the tenure holder.

Fishers are reminded that during harvest and transport in hot weather to reduce 
mortality on clams by minimizing the amount of clams they keep in each bag and 
to keep the clams cool by placing them in the water at the harvest location.  
Please re-bury all the discarded and undersized clams.

All eligible fishers must have their 2017 licence and meet the conditions of 
that licence (wear a high visibility vest with licence number clearly marked on 
it and the sacks of clams must be immediately tagged with the licence number as 
soon as clams are placed in it).  All licence holders must carry valid photo 
identification along with their licences.

Fishers should consult the 2016/18 Intertidal Clam Management Plan and the 
local DFO office for descriptions of closed areas and contact numbers for 
further information.
