FN1027-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Chum Salmon - Area D - Mid-Vancouver Island - Area 14 - Demonstration Fishery Application Information

In 2017, the Area D Gill Net Harvest Committee submitted a proposal through the
Commercial Salmon Allocation Framework process and has been working with the
Department to design a limited entry gill net assessment fishery for Area 14
terminal chum fisheries. This proposal is to design a limited entry fishery
that can evaluate the utility of early fishery CPUE in predicting terminal run
size for the aggregate of the Mid-Vancouver Island (MVI) systems in Area 14.
The objectives of this weekly small fleet fishery would be to:
- Determine in season stock strength of aggregate Mid Vancouver Island chum.
- Develop a catch-by-set-by-location database to further develop assessment
capabilities.
- Sample the catch for stock identification and other biological parameters.
- Evaluate bycatch interceptions.

The 2017 demonstration fishery opportunity is being considered in the following
Subareas:
14-4, 14-5, 14-7, 14-9, 14-10, portions of 14-11.

Note: Opening times and a description of finalized fishing areas will be
released in the opening Fishery Notice.

The demonstration fishery will be limited to a maximum of 10 vessels operating
in the demonstration fishery area. Fishers that are interested in
participating are required to participate in both of the two openings, first
opening scheduled to be October 13 to 15, 2017 and the second opening scheduled
to be October 20 to 22, 2017. Fishers will be required to communicate to the
Department catch-by-set-by-location information, including by-catch
interception. They will also be required to provide advanced notice of offload
time and location to allow for collection of samples for stock ID and other
biological parameters.

Area D licence holders interested in participating in these potential
demonstration fisheries, should contact Christine Bukta to apply. Only fishers
who are seriously considering making the commitment to fish in this
demonstration fishery during both openings should apply. Members of the Area D
Area Harvest Committee have invested significant time and energy to develop
these demonstration fishery proposals to provide potential future benefits to
the entire fleet.

Applications must clearly state the vessel name, VRN, vessel operator's name,
vessel operator's telephone number.

Applications may be hand delivered, text-messaged, or emailed, to DFO Campbell
River office. Email or text contact is preferred since responses can be
confirmed quickly.
