FN0950-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net and Seine - Chum - Area 21 & 121 - Information Update
The pre-season Nitinat chum forecast range is from 190,000 to 830,000. The working forecast used to plan fisheries is 510,000 which is higher than the upper fishery reference point of 325,000. As described in the Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP), when the pre- season forecast is above the upper reference point, a limited effort gill net fishery is planned. All Area E gill net vessels may participate in this fishery but if more than 75 attend the opening, the fishery will be limited to one day per week. If fewer than 75 vessels attend the opening, then the fishery will be open for a maximum of 120 vessel-days per week. This fishery is designed to achieve a precautionary 25 percent harvest rate and provide in-season assessment information. Due to by catch concerns for steelhead and coho, a minimum weed line requirement of 1.2 m will be in place, the open area will be limited inside a 2-mile boundary between Dare and Pachena Points and fisheries will be during daylight hours only. The first gill net opening is anticipated to be October 1, 2017. Seine fisheries are not expected until statistical week 10-3 unless in-season assessments indicate that the run size is greater than the upper fishery reference point and weekly escapement milestones have been exceeded.
