FN0927-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Troll - Chinook, Coho and Pink - Area F - Update September 11, 2017
Chinook: The chinook ITQ fishery reopened on August 25 (FN0689) with the same fishing areas as the previous fishery and an allowance for chum retention. The boundaries changed on September 10 (FN907) with the southern boundary moving down to Cape St. James and removal of the Graham Island ribbon boundary to the east of Shag Rock. The ribbon boundary west of Shag Rock to Langara Island will remain in effect until September 14, 2017. The estimated catch of chinook, since the reopening on August 25, is 10,000 chinook and 250 chum. Approximately 35 vessels participated in the opening with an average CPUE of 30 chinook per day in the first week. Effort has declined substantially as the availability of chinook ITQ has become limited. The 2017 season catch to date is estimated to be 99,050 chinook with less than 2000 pieces of available ITQ left to catch. Coho, Pink: The Dixon Entrance targeted coho fishery opened July 10 (FN0590). The current catch is estimated to be 326,000 coho and 38,000 pink. CPUE has declined to decadal averages at 40 coho per vessel per day. Area 3 Coho: The Nisga'a Lisims Government monitors Nass River coho abundance in-season using fishwheels. Nass River Coho abundance has been very strong to date resulting in the opening of Area 3 to troll (FN0780) on August 7. Mean CPUE ranged 36 coho per day at the start of the fishery to 20 coho per day during the end of August. Estimated catch to date in Area 3 is 9500 coho and 1500 pink. Area 3 is scheduled to close today (FN0878) for the balance of the season to reduce impacts on late timed coastal coho stocks. Central Coast Limited Entry Coho Demonstration Fishery: The fishery closed August 31 (FN0873) with a total of 4 vessels participating in the first half of August and 6 vessels participating the second half of August. Total estimated catch by this demo was 6,448 coho and 269 pinks from 85 vessel days. Haida Demonstration Fishery: The fishery opened August 9, 2017 (FN0791) with an allocation of coho based on 5 Area F Troll licences and is updated on a weekly basis. This equates to a 2.07% share of coho caught by Area F Troll which is currently 6,700 coho as of this week. While coho abundance has been high within Dixon Entrance, with above average catches by Area F Troll, coho appear to be holding off shore and coho presence inshore appears to be weak. There has been zero participation in this fishery to date. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Peter Katinic Area F Troll Manager 250-559-8330
