FN0864-ABORIGINAL - General Information - First Nations Food, Social and Ceremonial Fisheries in the Strait of Georgia Marine Waters
From 07:00 hours through 19:00 hours both Saturday August 26 and Sunday August 27, 2017, in Food Social and Ceremonial (FSC) fisheries directed at salmon species other than sockeye, the retention of sockeye that cannot be released alive and unharmed will be permitted to be retained in the following Areas and Subareas only: Areas 16, 18 and Subareas 17-11, 29-1 to 29-5. First Nations are reminded that there is no TAC for Fraser River sockeye and there are still serious conservation concerns and that every effort and attempt must be made to release sockeye alive while FSC fishing for other salmon species. Once all efforts and attempts have been made to release sockeye alive and unharmed, sockeye that are dead may be retained. First Nations with these Areas and Subareas on their communal licences are expected to work closely with DFO fishery managers to clearly communicate fishing plans for their community. Fishing plans should include the anticipated effort and gear type, the areas where fishing will take place, the targeted number of other (non-sockeye) salmon species, the monitoring and reporting plans, and the measures their fishers will take to both avoid sockeye and to release sockeye alive and unharmed (e.g. use of revival boxes, 'hot pick' or short soak for gill nets, and brailing for seines). For more information please participate in the Marine First Nations in-season update calls on Wednesdays at 11:00am. The call-in number is 1-877-413-4790; passcode 7276249. The next meeting of the Fraser River Panel will be the afternoon of Monday August 28, 2017 and there will be an update following that meeting. FOR MORE INFORMATION (This is included in the notice text): Contact Beth Pechter, Resource Management (250)286-5880 or the local DFO office in your area for updated information as it becomes available.
