Sanitary/Other Contamination Closures
Subject:
FN0837-SANITARY - Emergency Sanitary Closure in portions of Subarea 14-1, 14-2, 14-3 and 14-4

A Temporary Bypass Authorization has been granted to allow the flow of effluent
to bypass the contact tank while work is conducted on the Contact Splitter Box
at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre. All other treatment processes
will remain in use while this work is completed.

This work is scheduled to start on August 21, 2017 and will result in an
emergency sanitary closure placing portions of Subarea 14-1, 14-2, 14-3 and 14-
4 into closed status.

The Pacific Region Interdepartmental Shellfish Committee has recommended an
Emergency Sanitary Closure of the waters and intertidal foreshore of portions
of Subarea 14-1, 14-2, 14-3 and 14-4, as bivalve shellfish in the area may
become contaminated.

The area is described as: Portions of Subarea 14-1, 14-2, 14-3 and 14-4
encompassing French Creek and outside waters

Emergency Sanitary Closure 14.yy - French Creek:

The waters and intertidal foreshore of Georgia Strait near French Creek inside
a line drawn from a point on land at 49°21.26' north latitude and 124°22.97'
west longitude, thence northeasterly to a point in water at 49°22.54' north
latitude and 124°22.29' west longitude, thence southeasterly to a point in
water at 49°22.24' north latitude and 124°20.71' west longitude, thence
southerly to a point on land at 49°20.49' north latitude and 124°20.68' west
longitude, thence northwesterly following the shoreline of French Creek and
Columbia Beach to the point of commencement.

Once repair work has been completed and the effluent discharge has ceased, the
Emergency Sanitary Closure shall remain in place a minimum of 21 days at which
time the Pacific Region Interdepartmental Shellfish Committee will advise
Fisheries and Oceans Canada if changes to the status of the Emergency Sanitary
Closure are warranted.

Note that this notice does not describe other sanitary closures which may be in
effect, or Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP, red tide) and other marine
biotoxin closures. Detailed bivalve shellfish closure information and maps are
available at our website: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-
gp/contamination/index-eng.htmland at local DFO offices.
